//“Walls of Skulls & Bones!”
Reviewed 8 November 2006
We visited the Catacombs on a Saturday morning at about 11am. They had opened at 10am and there was already a queue as they only allow 200 visitors in the catacombs at any one time. You'll need to be fairly fit to visit as there are over 100 steps down into the tunnels and around 80 deep spiraled steps to get back to the surface - and no resting point! Once in the tunnels there are a few rooms featuring boards telling the history of the catacombs and then a very very long walk through a narrow tunnel with a low ceiling until you reach the bones. I wasn't sure what to expect, maybe a few skeletons arranged into body shapes. What I found were literally millions of peoples bones lining metre after metre of walls both sides of the tunnels, neatly stacked and arranged in patterns with femur ends and skulls making up most of the walls. The number of bones were amazing, stretching as far as the eye could see.

The catacombs are one of the strangest places I have ever visited. Certainly not suitable for children! It was a very spooky place with low lighting but I didn't find it as emotional as I thought I might. There is no tragic story to the bones, some came from a mass grave of people killed by an epidemic of some sorts, but most were just taken there from other graveyards. I think if they were all from the war or some other disaster I might have been able to empathize a little more. Nevertheless, its a very interesting place to visit. I certainly don't envy the people who had to arrange all the bones, it must have taken years.

Other things to mention are; wear sensible shoes. The ground is potholed and its a little wet and muddy in some places, plus there are a lot of tunnels to walk through. It wasn't particularly cold down there but the temperature difference may be noticed in the summer heat, so take a jumper. Don't take luggage -
they can't store it, and the entrance is streets away from the exit. Also, they will check any handbags for bones when you exit. Yes, people really do try to take them. There was a skull sitting on top of the counter that they had found in someone's bag the day before. Unbelievable.//
